The 4:47 Call
In April 2024, a regular client called at 4:47 PM. Their plant runs a polypropylene plastic recycling line, and the baler was down. The main hydraulic cylinder was leaking, two seals had failed, and they had a truckload of baled material scheduled to ship Monday morning. Missing that deadline meant a $50,000 penalty clause.

The First Mistake: Assuming “Rubber” Is One Material
When I first started specifying seals, I assumed a rubber seal was a rubber seal. Pick the right diameter and you're done. That's a dangerous way to think. This job proved why.
We quoted a standard nitrile kit because that's what most balers use. But the old seal looked strange. It was swollen, with chunks missing along the sealing lip. That meant chemical attack and abrasion. That's a red flag. The environment wasn't just hydraulic oil. There was moisture, fine plastic dust, and a lot of reciprocating motion. TPU rubber material is not exotic, but it's not the default. It has better abrasion resistance than NBR and handles wet, gritty conditions much better. It's also a little more expensive and harder to source quickly. At that moment, I didn't care about quick. I cared about not doing this twice.

That's it.
We sent them a short length of reinforced rubber hose from our stock. It solved the problem without another hour of fighting with PVC. Emergency calls are never just one problem. You have to triage.
36 Hours to Go
Friday morning, the Trelleborg o-rings were confirmed. The TPU material was in stock at a distributor in Toronto, and we arranged overnight courier. The freight and rush fees came to $310, on top of the $1,850 for seals and hose. Honestly, it felt steep. I kept thinking about the $50,000 penalty.
Then came the curveball. At 2 PM Friday, the client sent a new photo. The cylinder gland was worn. The mating surface had scoring, and the new seals wouldn't hold pressure without a repair. The local machine shop couldn't get to it until Monday. That was too late.

Material matters more than speed. Speed gets you to the first startup. Material selection gets you through the next year.
Ask about the environment, not just the part number. The client originally gave me an o-ring size and a “like this” photo. The detail that saved the job, the need for TPU rubber material, only came from asking: What's it touching? How hot? How often?
And if someone asks you how to remove glued PVC pipe, cut it out. Don't waste time trying to un-glue it.
