When a 'One-Stop Shop' Almost Cost Us a Pool Project: A Quality Inspector's Take on Specialization

The morning it all started

Last September, I was handed a file for a new commercial pool project. Our company needed a complete fluid-handling system: PP pipes for the circulation loop, hydraulic hoses for the filtration pressure lines, and ABS plastic fittings for a few non-potable access points. My job? Review every vendor before anything reached our site.

One supplier—let's call them Vendor X—came in with a quote 22% below everyone else. Their sales deck bragged about being a “complete polymer solution provider”. They claimed they could do everything: rubber hoses, plastic extrusions, injection-molded ABS parts, even custom seals. On paper, it looked like a dream for procurement.

But I've been doing this for over a decade. And my gut said: “nobody is that good at everything.”

The first red flag: ABS plastic safety

Vendor X sent samples of their ABS fittings. From the outside, the surface finish was glossy, the threads were clean. They looked exactly like the ones we already used. The reality? And yes, I still get asked: “is ABS plastic safe?” My answer is always: “Safe for what? Show me the certification. Otherwise, use PP.”
