But for anything that touches your brand reputation, production reliability, or safety? Don't cheap out. The cost of a failure—in downtime, replacement, and reputation—dwarfs the material price difference.

We didn't have a formal material specification process when I started. Cost us when a budget gasket failed during a critical production run. Now I maintain a list of approved materials and suppliers. It's saved us more than I can count.
