I Almost Rejected a $14,000 Trelleborg Order. The Problem Was Ours, Not Theirs.

The Setup: A Production Line Upgrade

March 2024. I was standing on our production floor, staring at a pallet of Trelleborg rubber products that I was convinced were defective. Trelleborg industrial hoses, a custom long air hose for the pneumatic system, and a set of PVC guides for the packaging line — guides that were supposed to be painted, and just as obviously shouldn't have been peeling.

Here's the background. We were upgrading one of our older packaging lines, and I was responsible for specifying every rubber and plastic component on the project. Seals, gaskets, hoses, guides — the unglamorous parts that keep a line running. We'd placed a $14,000 order with Trelleborg, and it had arrived exactly on schedule. That was the last thing that went smoothly.

It Started with a Bad Question

The trouble started with Dave, our maintenance lead. He's been with us for 15 years, and he's not the kind of guy who asks for help lightly.

"Hey," he said, holding up a hydraulic hose with what looked like a scored fitting. "How do you remove a hydraulic hose without wrecking the collar? Because whatever I'm doing isn't working."

But I also know what a bad rejection costs. In 2022, we rejected a whole batch of components from a supplier, only to discover the issue was actually our installation procedure. That mistake cost us $22,000 in rework and pushed our launch back three weeks. I didn't want a repeat.

So instead of firing off a rejection, I called Trelleborg's technical support. I expected a defensive answer. "Our products meet all specifications." "You must have handled them incorrectly." I was ready for a fight.

Their engineer asked a surprisingly calm question:

"Did you use a primer before you started painting PVC?"

Silence on my end.

Honestly? We hadn't. Here's what we'd done: wiped the surfaces with solvent, scuffed them with fine sandpaper, and sprayed on an enamel paint that worked fine on metal. That approach is fine for steel. PVC is different. Modern PVC compounds contain plasticizers and processing aids that migrate to the surface over time. Paint applied directly — without an adhesion promoter — is essentially sitting on a layer of release agent. No wonder it peeled.

The "just scuff it and spray it" approach comes from an era when PVC formulations were simpler. Today, most extrusion and injection-molding grades include additives that make painting PVC far more complicated. The proper procedure involves a primer designed for low-surface-energy plastics. Trelleborg had documented all of this. I'd skimmed it, not studied it.

My mistake. Not theirs.

The Long Air Hose Wasn't the Problem. I Was.

Then there was the long air hose. Dave had said it felt "too stiff" for the routing we needed. I'd assumed the hose was substandard.

Wrong.

What we'd ordered was a 50-foot general-purpose rubber air hose with a half-inch bore. It was exactly what the product number said: heavy, durable, reinforced for high working pressure. What we actually needed was a polyurethane air hose — lighter, more flexible, better elastic memory — because the hose had to articulate with a moving arm on the line.

From the outside, "long air hose" sounds like one product. The reality is there are dozens of configurations: different tube compounds, reinforcement layers, pressure ratings, temperature ranges, bend radii. Trelleborg's catalog listed both options with flex and bend radius data for each. I'd flipped to the air hose section, seen "50 ft, 1/2 in bore," and ordered without considering the application.

That's the kind of mistake you only make once. Or at least, that's what I tell myself.

How to Remove a Hydraulic Hose

Dave's hydraulic hose problem turned out to be an experience issue, not a product issue. The hose was seized in place after years of service. He'd been trying to pry it off by wedging a screwdriver under the collar — which is exactly how you damage fittings.

The proper method: relieve the system pressure, apply penetrating oil, let it sit, then use a correctly sized spanner on the hex nut while supporting the hose end. Takes about two minutes once you know the technique. Trelleborg's installation guide had a diagram. Neither Dave nor I had looked at it.

According to SAE J517 (sae.org), hydraulic hose assemblies are designed for specific pressure and temperature ranges, and improper removal or installation can damage both the fitting seal and the reinforcement. That standard isn't optional reading. It's the difference between a connection that lasts a decade and one that fails at the worst possible moment.

What We Did About It

Here's the short version of the fix:

  • We re-prepped the PVC guides with the right adhesion promoter and repainted them. That cost about $1,800 in labor and materials, and added two days to the schedule.
  • We ordered a polyurethane long air hose in the correct material. Trelleborg cross-shipped it in three days.
  • Dave got half a day of training on proper hydraulic hose handling. That cost us one afternoon and a bit of pride.

None of the original material was defective. Every item on that pallet matched its specification. The problem was that we'd specified the wrong products in two cases and mishandled the third. I'd rather spend 10 minutes reading a spec sheet than deal with mismatched expectations later. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. In March 2024, I was not that customer. It cost us $1,800 and a couple of gray hairs.

Next time, I read the documentation before I blame the vendor. And I definitely know how to remove a hydraulic hose without wrecking the fitting.
